6th Grade Curriculum

 
 

Bible

The purpose of the Bible curriculum is to encourage students that as followers of Christ it is our responsibility to share the truths of the Bible, to follow God's teachings in all that we do, and to apply God's word to our daily life. Students will memorize scripture, make application of the verses to their own lives, and demonstrate a general understanding of the New Testament lessons.

 

Science

The purpose of sixth grade science is to build a love and understanding about the world around them, which God created. This is accomplished by using various hands on activities. One process used is the scientific method. The students gain the skills needed for research, hypothesizing, experimenting, and drawing a conclusion. The topics covered are as follows:

Pet Project
Cycles in Earth and Space
Matter and Energy
Forces and Machines
Understanding Living Things
Living Things Grow and Respond
The Living Planet

 

Social Studies

In sixth grade Social Studies students study part of God's amazing creation. They look at the continents of Africa, Asia, and North America. Students will learn about the different cultures and their land by singing native songs, learning words in native tongues, and by eating their foods. Students also learn the location of countries by drawing maps and having map tests. They learn about the different countries by taking notes, researching assigned countries, and by listening to guest speakers tell about their experiences. Current events are also a part of this course. The units of study are as follows:

Geography
United States
Canada
North America
Asia
Africa

 

Language Arts

The purpose of the sixth grade language arts class is to expose the students to all aspects of the language arts curriculum. These areas include reading, writing, listening, spelling, and speaking. The students will be evaluated on grammar and mechanic skills within their own writings. Each student will explore various types of literature written by various authors. The novels include narrative, suspense, and historical fiction. Assessment and evaluation will be determined by the student's response to the literature and the ability to ask and answer higher-level questions. The students will examine the literature to appreciate different cultures, conflicts, and reliance upon God's word. In addition, students will be able to examine the factors that apply to their own lives. The literature is chosen on the basis of broadening the students' experiences and helping them to appreciate the similarities and differences in others. Novels used include the following:

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Bud, Not Buddy
Hangman's Curse

Personal Narrative
Descriptive Writing

Projects and book reports are incorporated into the language and literature curriculum.


Math

The purpose of sixth grade mathematics is to strengthen the students' arithmetic skills to prepare them for a higher level of mathematical content. The five goals for students include realizing mathematics is of value in everyday use, to become math problem solvers, to become confident in their ability to do math, to learn to communicate mathematically, and to learn to reason mathematically. Students will master the following:

Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts and terminology
Place value Borrowing and carrying
Four digit multiplication Four digit division
Story problems Averaging
Roman numerals Rounding
English and Metric measures Converting measures
Adding, Subtracting, and Multiplying measures Divisibility rules
