Creation
Adam and Eve
Joseph
Noah
Moses
Ruth
The Church Begins
The Ten Commandments
The boyhood and early ministry of Jesus
The first Christmas
Crucifixion and resurrection of Christ

Language

First graders begin learning the steps of the writing process. The students will learn to write short sentences and, eventually, stories. In addition, students will begin to recognize parts of speech, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, capitalization, and basic punctuation. Our goal is that each child leaves first grade feeling confident as a writer.

Textbook: Harcourt Language

Penmanship

The primary goal for first graders is to help them attain neat and legible penmanship. Each student will master correct posture, letter formation, and spacing. Penmanship will be evaluated throughout the student's work.

Textbook: ABeka Writing with Phonics 1

Reading

The reading objectives include decoding skills, comprehension, sequencing, vocabulary building, and character studies. This will be strengthened by guided and independent reading in class and at home. The ultimate intention of Dade Christian School is to instill a love for reading in each child.

Textbook: ABeka Reading Program

Science

Teachers will nurture the student's natural curiosity for science. Students will make projects, conduct experiments, and read books in the following areas:

Living and Nonliving Things
Plants
Animals
Habitats
Earth's Land
Natural Resources
Measuring Weather
The Sky and the Seasons
Matter and Energy
Forces

Textbook: Harcourt Science

Social Studies

The social studies curriculum gives students an awareness of community, cultural differences, saving our resources, and safety issues. Pioneer life, Indians, the American flag, and other national symbols will be topics discussed through the school year. Map and globe skills will be introduced as well.

Textbook: Harcourt Horizons

Spelling

Dade Christian School's goal is for our students to become independent spellers. To achieve this goal, students learn phonics rules for reading and then apply these rules to spelling. This enables the students to decode the word and then spell it on their own. Some words are exceptions to the rules; therefore, daily practice of the spelling words at home is necessary.

Textbook: ABeka Spelling & Poetry 1

Phonics

Phonics is a tool that helps students decode words, which in turn enables them to make meaning of printed text. Consonants, vowels, and blends are reinforced daily, as well as the practice of the Phonics Charts. The phonics grade is a portion of the student's reading grade. The following are some skills covered in first grade:

Rhyming
Opposites
Contractions
Compound words
Alphabetical order
Syllables
Prefixes
